I recorded these anthems with a cassette tape mic in dangling over my uncle Werner's TV speaker on a cold weeknight in Montreal. It was the Challenge Cup, an All Star game sub featuring the best of the Soviet Union vs. Team NHL.

It was recorded at Madison Square Garden, New York, in January 1979. The anthems, beginning with the Soviet anthem, were sung by Georgia Guitlein (sp?), an extraordinary soprano, the legendary Robert Merrill did the US anthem, and the remarkable Roger Doucet sings the bilingual Canadian Anthem.

Some things that catch the ear: Traditionally, Roger sang the anthem in French first, and finish in English. Here, he sings them in reverse order. Listen to how the NYC audience receives Roger before he sings a note. It is because he got worldwide recognition for his magnificent multilingual-anthem performances during the 1976 Canada Cup, including Czech, Russian, and other anthems.

Enjoy!

Andy
